Lamisil (Terbinafine hydrochloride) tablets are primarily effective on the dermatophytes class of fungi. They are indicated in patients who suffer from onychomycosis of the fingernail or toenail due to dermatophytes. Before starting the treatment, you should confirm the diagnosis of onychomycosis by obtaining proper nail samples for laboratory examination that includes KOH preparation, fungal culture, or nail biopsy.

 

The dosage of Lamisil (Terbinafine) is usually determined by your healthcare provider after taking a number of factors into consideration. These include: the kind of fungal infection you are affected by, your weight (in case of children), other medical conditions you may be suffering from, and other medications you may be using.

 

In case of fingernail fungal infection, the recommended dosage of Lamisil in adults is normally one 250 mg tablet taken orally once a day for 6 weeks. Patients with fungal infections in toenails, the dosage is the same one 250 mg pill taken by mouth once a day, but the duration of the treatment is 12 weeks instead of six. Lamisil should be taken at the same time everyday to avoid any missed dose and sustain a uniform level of the medication in the system. Always take the medicine in exact doses as recommended by your doctor. Adverse reactions may occur if you use it in large amounts or for longer period than directed. You can also read out the instructions on your prescription label to clear any doubt. Complete the prescription period as discontinuing the treatment in the middle will not cure your infection.

 

If you miss a regular dose of Terbinafine, take the missed dose as soon as you remember it. However, skip the missed dose and wait till your next dosing schedule if it is almost time for the next dose. Do not take two doses within 24 hours as overdoses may be hazardous for your health. Emergency medical attention is a necessity if you take excess amounts of this drug. Overdose symptoms may include headache, nausea, vomiting, stomach pain, dizziness, undetermined rash, or repeated urination.

 

Lamisil may interact with certain medications if taken concurrently. Rifampin decreases Terbinafine blood absorptions, potentially reducing the effectiveness of the drug, and cimetidine (Tagamet) may increase Terbinafine blood levels. The second effect would not be anticipated to head to any problems.

 

Abide by your healthcare provider’s guidelines about any restrictions on food, beverages, or activity during Terbinafine treatment.
